Last Exile: Fam 20 - Giant Chainsaws

Advanced alien technology that can instantly wipe out everything? No problem, I got a giant chainsaw to fight them off with! So one final episode to see all my predictions come true about this show. I was pretty spot on last week, it is semi-difficult to predict shows like these. They tend to throw in random curve balls for no reason and explain situations as awkwardly as possible.

Another Anime 11 - Funny Faces the Anime

I expected them to advance far enough to know who the real dead one was, but I guess they rather hold that for the final episode. This made for quite an amusing episode, I wouldn't say scary, but definitely amusing. Yet again we get a week where they create "fake" tension. Misaki could mention who the dead person is during the duration of the episode instead of waiting until the end to do anything. At least it Akazawa didn't die... yet.

Gundam Age 23 - Return of Grodek

Asemu being emo and moral all day is getting boring. The cold and Flint seems to be pretty awesome now that he isn't the main character. I assume the arc will end with Asemu finally finding his path out of his father's shadow. The slight warning, pretty bad post, Kawaii-Kon has stolen all my attention and I have no ability to write right now.

Ozuma 01 - First Impressions

I was surprised to find that the first episode of this show aired so early. Then again, it is the outlier with only six episodes and all. Let me first say that I have never seen any other works of Leiji Matsumoto, or any anime from the 80's for that matter. After watching this first episode, it was pretty standard fare: boy saves damsel in distress and make their escape from the masked villain.

What I'm really digging about this show are the retro character designs. I feel like a lot of contemporary anime use the same facial templates and just add eye color and the crazily impossible hairstyles, which is a rather unfortunate change. As far as the setting goes, the first thing that came mind was a game my cousin got me when I was a kid: Dune 2000. It was probably the whole sand sci-fi environment with the huge sand-worms. The show also uses a bunch of in-universe jargon, which is probably typical of most sci-fi shows out there to really immerse you into their world. Unfortunately, this is only 6 episodes in duration, so I doubt we'll get much of the world explained to the viewers.

As for the characters, nobody in particular really stood out to me. The main character, Sam, is your typical carefree happy-go-lucky kind of guy. The main girl, Maya, seems like the rather useless type. Then again, I should give her credit for escaping the enemies on her own. The segment with the doctor seems to show that she knows something about Maya because of the ominous music that played. The masked villain seems to treat her with rather high regard, so perhaps the faction that he's with thinks her as some sort of "Eve" in this wasteland of sand. My favorite character thus far is probably the red-haired captain. She can tell fortune, her hair is ever-flowing, and she just stands there while being fired at by lasers like a boss. What's not to like?

The overall quality of the art so far is pretty disappointing. It's pretty obvious that they are under-budgeted. It's especially noticeable during the span when they first introduce Port Oase. The animation wasn't all that great either. It was mostly simple character movements, shaking the screen, and panning the camera. Overall, it was a pretty mediocre episode. However, I'll continue watching because it's only six episodes long. This is my first exposure to Leiji Matsumoto's works after all, so if I like it, I might try one of his older series.

Symphogear 11 - Bullet Proof Boobs

Oh god, the just had to have this scene. Aim for the exposed skin only to find it is ineffective. I guess this is the answer to age long question, why female exposes so much skin, it is better protection then metal! Not to mention, the more skin exposed, the higher the defense rating, which is consistent with her armor being the best Symphogear. Humourous armor aside, we finally get to see Chris' swan song, best of the bunch so far. It was a decent episode, finally moving back into the action and grimdark theme.

Mirai Nikki Ep 21 Uryuu's Final Act

Au Contraire!
Episode 21 sure took its sweet time coming out. I had to suffer for weeks without my Mirai Nikki fix, but it was worth the wait with Uryuu's continued spotlight and a return to a more believable Yukkii. Plenty of action filled up this episode with a steady pace of awesomeness at every turn.

Uryuu has captured the role of "best diary holder" for her craziness above the other diary holders, and with how hard it is to figure her out. I was highly interested with how she would take to Nichijima's death, and lucky for me she continues her bad-ass bomb girl role, but retains this subtle sadness inside of her for his death. Uryuu really shined in this episode with her resolve to help Yukkii and we even see a rare emotional side that links to her deepest desires to have her family back. I realized how similar the two are, and how crazy it is to see how Yukkii could one day turn up to be just like Uryuu.

Why not?
The last few episodes had Yukkii running around being all serious showing no emotion as he killed others, but thankfully he returns to normal after putting on a strong resolve to become god and bring his family back from the dead. Yukkii was brought back down to Earth after his conflict with Uryuu, which was a nice return to a believable Yukkii rather than the hardened version we saw in the past few episodes. Yukkii is once again an interesting character as we get closer to the end, with a bleak future that gives no promises for how things will turn out.

BLOCKED!
Akise still plays a role in this game, safeguarding Eighth he now holds a key piece and will help determine how the game will end. Akise is the only non-diary holder that interests me, he is cunning, smart, and is able to play along with any situation to make things more interesting

Wheres your hand at?
There were a few things that really bothered me in this episode near the end. After returning home with his friends, Yuno tells him he still needs to kill off Eleventh, Eighth, and Ninth, and yet we were lead to believe that Ninth and Eleventh had already died. After learning about Deus and Eleventh's creation of the diaries, nothing else was really brought up about Uryuu and Deus' conversation.

I'm super pumped to find out more about who Yuno is and what this secret is about her not being the real Gasai Yuno, even after accessing the vault of which only the real Yuno would have access to. The mysterious gears popping up over town suggest Deus doesn't have much time left, with Murumuru pointing out that Deus should last until the 28th, the day where Yukkii and Yuno are suppose fall in love or something.

P.S. I found this poster at my school, accidental meaning? I THINK NOT!

Guilty Crown 21 - Use Love to Beat Suffering

So only one more episode until the finale. It has been a rollercoaster of a season. The plot was a train wreck, but at least it did a good job at being so absurd it was funny all season; Even if that was not the intention. The only real highlight this episode was watching Daath vs Shu fight. It was also so humorous to see how they explained the Shu x Inori was to cure each other's "pain". Too bad it was just so terribly done, maybe if they thought of this idea at the start of the anime rather then tossing it in at the end... Oh ya, Souta didn't make the endcard, huzzah!

Spring Anime Season 2012 Preview

So spring anime season is upon us. These are the 2 most popular charts, again credits are listed on the individual charts:

This is probably the longest chart I have seen in a while, lucky I tried to start early on this post! What I realized lately was I should stick to anime originals or anime that don't have translation of another medium yet. It keeps you guessing without the spoiler. Anytime I like it enough, my thirst for what happens next just brings me to read the "original" material. Very rarely will I prefer the anime, Fate/Zero is probably one of those exceptions. A short rant later, it just means from this season onwards, I am going to stick more closely to anime originals (though I did it last season anyways)

Nisemonogatari 10: The Fakes

So this episode, being the second to the last, put the main story to its climax(-ish) state quite fast. Other anime would usually give more time and progress the story throughout longer episodes. But they did a good job of creating a well structured main story leading to the end without leaving any plot holes or making it too fast paced. Mind you, this is Nishio Ishins “Monogatari” series and this is kind of pace that the series would go. It takes the main story and mixes it up with the side stories, and Ishin-san does it quite well.

Shinobu! Damn I love this girl… When she said she was actually talkative, she really is talkative. We also get to see her love for donuts a lot clearer here.

Ok, in this episode I found it quite odd and disappointing to know that Araragis aggression is quite up there. Here, he strips Tsukihi, ties her hands, and gropes her under the pretext of asking why does she not have any scars (-.-“). Really, Araragi knows he has got a harem in his hands. This is most likely just fan service but, I prefer an MC that won’t go physical under such odd pretexts. BTW, showing that Tsukihi had no scars was a foreshadowing of her part in the main story.

The sisters have boyfriends?! That’s a nice way of introducing such things. Despite my distaste for incest I was taken aback by the fact that a female, that is supposed to be part of the MCs harem, is in another relationship? Now my feeling for this goes back and forth between saying this is the right thing and but its Araragis harem! Hopefully they get into more detail by the next episode and things get clearer, at least for me.

There was this scene where while Araragi was speaking of their boyfriends that Tsukihis “tail thing on her head” was doing some weird gestures, I feel this was implying something on Tsukihis part. Also I found the cut of when Araragi sighs after the conversation to emphasize this more. Dunno, this just got me thinking…

Lol, for Kaikis return! Usually trouble characters don’t return or if they do return, they do so after a long time. But in this series, Kaiki returns with his iconic character and expressions simply as an informant to Araragi and us, the audience. And along the way Kaiki still manages to get away with snatching someone else’ (Araragis) money. Whether his role in the series has officially end with be determined in the next episode.

So with Kaikis explanations, Kagenui Yozuru and Ononoki Yotsugi are some sort of ghost busters. And now their target is someone immortal. Araragi would of course assume he is their target, but really this arc is about Tsukihi. Now why they wanna kill her? They explain that they have a hatred for oddities that pretend to be human and deceive humans. Really that reasoning isn’t much when I think about it story wise. But then again this entire series has always had unique people with characters that can go beyond reason. Isn’t that how the world is right now? Beyond reason… Unreasonable.

So I guess by now you guys have noticed a considerable emphasis on the word “fake” in this series. Well, the title of the series is “Nisemonogatari” which translates to “Impostory”. So we got the fake sisters as well as their fake justice, and the Con man, the fake man known as Kaiki. I’ll go into more detail in the full review of this series.

Now Kagenui Yozuru says that Tsukihi is a fake sister. But I don’t think so, how I see it or how I’d like it to be is Tsukihi inherited immortality whilst in her Moms womb. So she is still Araragis sister, she does have the families iconic “tail in the head thing”. This is just my theory but we will hopefully get a better understanding of things in the next and last episode.

Overall this one’s a well structured episode leading towards the end without making things go too fast. Yes, perhaps this arc was the one that was given less attention and ended up having a less dynamic story. Still, it’s something worth watching…

Last Exile: Fam 19 - Grand Exile

The Vasant looks so much better with her hair down then in that cap thing. So the final boss has finally appeared in this show, the Grand Exile. I guess this would be the main Exile while all those other ones are just fragments of this main body. Quite clearly they have no intention in involving any character from the first season and leave Fam to save the day with her magical moe powers.
