Spring 2011 Anime Preview

Here's a chart of the the upcoming anime, from CartDriver's blog and cowboybibimbop:

It looks like a decent season. What I noticed was that there's a lot more anime this season compared to the winter season (it's almost doubled). This single post probably was the longest post (read: time spent) I have made ever (around 7 hours of pure working).
(Aaro Note~ : It was hard for me to edit too. Curse you, Pearz.)

Small and slightly random note: I have always been an advocate of Photobucket but that (and Picasa, the Google one) likes to resize your image and it wouldn't let me upload charts that are just so big. I had to turn to Imageshack for the first time, so maybe I'll use that one more in the future.

Anyway: I didn't include the description of anything that's a Season 2, since anyone that watched it before will already know what it's about. Anyone that hasn't watched it yet will probably look for the first season before watching the second one.

I'll list them out in the same order as Cartdriver's chart since I'm lazy (though he's missing one anime that I added at the end).

Everyday Life (Nichijou) - based off the manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Slice of Life
Description:
The contents are anything but everyday. It follows the insane and completely insane “everyday life” of a group of high school students.
[Description from Musashi Quality.]
Thoughts:
This seems a little... It's just too slice of life for my taste. I will probably give it one episode, though I strongly doubt it will get much more than that from me unless the comedy is really just that good. The general case is that I don't really like "random" humor (or I would finish Zetsubou Sensei).

Sket Dance - based off Manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Slice of Life
Description:
The hilarious misadventures of the "Sket Dan"; a trio of high-schoolers who help out people as part of their club activity. Himeko, the violent "yankee"-girl with a soft spot for cute things. Switch, the brainy otaku who only talks via a computerized speech-application. And Bossun, the atypical leader of this loony bunch.
[Origins of description unknown. (Aaro Note~ : Everyone plagiarizes.)]
Thoughts:
The trailer looked decent, at least. I probably won't follow it, but it does have a bit of promise of MAYBE making it. I'll probably pick up the manga for a few chapters soon to see how it is; I mean, if it lasted this long in Shounen Jump, it can't be too bad right?

[C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control - anime-original [Trailer]
Genre:
Sci-Fi, Thriller
Description:
The Japanese government was rescued from the brink of financial collapse by the Sovereign Wealth Fund. For its citizens, however, life has not improved, and unemployment, crime, suicide, and despair are rampant. Kimimaro, raised by his maternal grandmother after the disappearance of his father and the death of his mother, is a scholarship student whose only dream is to avoid all this and live a stable life. One day, however, he meets a man who offers him a large sum of money if he'll agree to pay it back. From then on his fate is radically altered as he's drawn into a mysterious area known as "The Financial District."
[Description from ANN.]
Thoughts:
Not too much info on this show since it's an anime-original series. A mix of economic stuff is generally right up my ally; I really love it. The problem comes when they screw it up and then just talk out of their ass, as if they actually understand economics...

Ginatama - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Sci-Fi
Note:
Ongoing anime.

Deadman Wonderland - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
Description:
Ganta Igarashi has been convicted of a crime that he hasn't committed, and sent to a new, privately owned and operated prison, where the inmates are the main attraction in a modern day twist to the gladiatorial coliseums of ancient times.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
I kept up with the manga back from almost when it first came out. I gotta say that there is a lot of blood and gore. I don't see how they won't censor most of it in the anime. I'll watch one episode, but the chances are that I won't keep up since I'm 99% sure the manga is the superior version.

Electromagnetic Wave Women and Adolescent Boy (Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko) - based off light novel [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy
Description:
The story revolves around a high school boy named Niwa Makoto. He lives with his aunt’s family since his parents are away on business. It is there where he meets his mysterious cousin of the same age Touwa Erio — who happens to tie a futon mattress around her upper body and is a self-proclaimed alien. Her staple food is pizza. Erio had been missing for half a year and was found floating in the sea. She doesn't remember anything about what happened during that period of time, but she began to think that it was the act of an alien and wanders the neighbourhood wrapped in the futon.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
This seems kinda sketchy, but I guess I can give it a shot. I don't know really what to think about this one since it could go anywhere.
(Aaro Note~ : This is right up your alley.)

Steins;Gate -based off visual novel [Trailer]
Genre:
Adventure, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Description:
This takes place in Akihabara and is about a group of friends who have managed to customize their microwave into a device that can send text messages to the past. As they perform different experiments, an organization named SERN who has been doing their own research on time travel tracks them down and now the characters have to find a way to avoid being captured by them.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
So, I will definitely watch this one but I am super skeptical. It's the same writer as Chaos;Head (notice that similar naming style) but that had like the worst ending ever. I refer back to it every time I think of an anime that started off so good and fell so far. I really hope it doesn't happen with this anime.

Tea for Universe, Tea for Life (Hyouge Mono) - based off manga [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Drama, Historical
Description:
It was the Sengoku-era, when the warlords usurped each other. There was a man whose soul was overtaken by the ways of tea and material greed, as he worked his way up toward greater power and status. His name was Sasuke Furuta, a subordinate warrior of Nobunaga Oda. With his world broadened by Nobunaga the Genius, and his spiritual insight learned from Senno Soueki the Master of Tea, Sasuke drove road to Hyouge Mono. To live or not to live. For the power of the art.
[Description from B-U M.]
Thoughts:
Um... From the art-style in the manga, I probably won't even give it a chance. If I can find a trailer/character that can captivate me, then maybe. Otherwise, zero chance.

You’re Being Summoned, Azazel-san (Yondemasu Yo, Azazel-san) - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy
Description:
Akutabe is a detective, who summons devils to solve the clients' troubles. One day, a low class devil Azazel Atsushi is summoned by Akutabe and is used harshly by him and his assistant Rinko.
Thoughts:
I can't un-see that trailer, no matter how much I hope. A firm no. Zero chance.

Moshidora - based off novel [Trailer]
Genre:
Drama, Slice of Life
Description:
A school girl leads a baseball club using lessons from a book called Drucker's Management.
[Description from ANN.]
Thoughts:
This is the highest-selling book in Japan, which is supposed to be a pretty big thing. Being such a big hit, I'll give it at least two episodes since drama usually takes time to settle in. I don't have high expectations though, since I'm not a huge fan of drama.

Ano Hana (Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai) - anime-original [Trailer]
Genre:
Slice of Life
Description:
Six childhood friends grew apart in high school. One of them is Jintan, now a shut-in. He gets a request to fulfill a wish for Menma, the only one of their friends to have stayed the same over the years. In order to grant her wish, he will have to find and reunite their old friends.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
Watching the trailer, I got the same vibe that I got from watching the first episodes of Hourou Musuko. It's probably gonna be too gentle and slow-paced for my liking. Either way, I'll give it one episode if I can even sit through that much...

Appleseed XIII - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Action, Sci-Fi
Description:
In the wake of the destruction of a worldwide non-nuclear war, the city Olympus has become the control center of the world. Run by Bioroids (cloned humans made from only the best DNA), it is defended from terrorists by special military forces. Among these are former LAPD SWAT member Deunan Knotts and her multipurpose cyborg partner Brialeos. They face a challenge from the Human Liberation Front and its terrorist underbelly the Argonauts. The leader of this group, Al Ceides, supposedly died 20 years ago in an attack on Poseidon, but now his shadow emerges once again.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
I definitely liked the movies, so this is probably a guaranteed watch. It has to be completely overshadowed by other anime or really screw up based off what I saw in the movies. This supposedly follows the manga, which I haven't looked at.

Showa Monogatari - anime-original [Trailer]
Genre:
Slice of Life
Description:
The story follows the Yamazaki family in Tokyo during the year 1964, which is when Japan hosted the summer Olympics. Supposedly, aimed at seniors.
Thoughts:
There are two OVAs that came out earlier this year, but no one subbed it. I mean, fansub groups are not seniors, so why would they bother? I doubt anyone will sub this, so not much to say about it - but if it does, I will give it one episode to see what an anime aimed at seniors is like.

Kaiji Season 2 - based off manga [trailer link]
Genre:
Gambling
Note:
Ongoing anime.

Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist) - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Action, Fantasy, Shounen
Description:
This world consists of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. The first is the world in which the humans live, Assiah. The other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Ordinarily, travel between the two, and indeed any kind of contact between the two, is impossible. However, the demons can pass over into this world by possessing anything that exist within it. Satan is the god of demons, but there's one thing that he doesn't have, and that's a substance in the human world that is powerful enough to contain him! For that purpose he created Rin, his son from a human woman, but will his son agree to his plans? Or will he become something else...? An exorcist?
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
This is very shounen, which I generally don't like too much. So, I decided to read the first chapter and it didn't seem that bad. Chances are that if the anime looks interesting, I'll just pick up the manga and read on, ignoring the anime anyways.

Toriko - based off manga [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Shounen
Description:
In the world where the taste and texture of food are very important there is Toriko, a hunter of precious foods regularly hired by restaurants and the rich, a man with inhuman skills to capture the ferocious, evasive and rare animals to complete his ultimate dinner course and then his current accomplice a weak timid person who was inspired by Toriko's greatness and accompanies him on all his journeys on his quest for the course of his life
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
No. The art turns me off and I could never even pick up the manga once.

Tiger and Bunny - anime-original [Trailer]
Genre:
Action, Mecha
Description:
Schternbilt City is home to people called "Next," who use their special abilities to protect the people as superheroes. These heroes solve cases and save lives so they can wear sponsor logos or acquire "hero points." Their activities are documented on the popular program "Hero TV," which picks the "King of Heroes" in a yearly ranking. The veteran hero Wild Tiger has always preferred to work alone, but now he's been assigned the rookie Barnaby Brooks Jr., who has a different perspective on being a superhero.
[Description from ANN.]
Thoughts:
The story premise seems decent, but the art style didn't seem good. There's not enough to captivate me into watching one episode, unless I see rave reviews appear.

The World God Only Knows 2 - based off manga [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Harem
Thoughts:
I actually keep up with the manga, but I couldn't stand even one episode of this. The manga, I feel, already moves too slow and the anime moves even slower.

Hana-Saku Iroha - based off manga (kinda) [Trailer]
Genre:
Slice of Life
Description:
Ohana Matsumae is sent to live with her grandmother, who she has never met nor spoken to, at her Taisho-era (1920s) hot springs inn. It's not a lifestyle that Ohana would have chosen, but she decidesnot to be discouraged and to make the most of her new circumstances.
[Description from ANN.]
Thoughts:
So, I was kind of conflicted on the basis of anime. The anime isn't airing until Spring and the manga started running in Dec10, but the manga is based off the anime. So, it's hard to say which is based off which. This seems very shoujo rather than harem based off trailer, even though it seems like a group of girls with very few males. If I end up watching one episode, it will really depend on my mood - probably not, though.

Maria Holic Alive - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy
Thoughts:
I actually might consider looking at Season 1 or at least the manga; I'll see. I'm putting it on the long to-see list.

Fireball Charming - anime-original [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Parody
Thoughts:
I watched 3 episodes of the first season to see what it was about. The comedy is hugely based off puns in the Japanese language; spending time looking at TL notes really detracts from the joke. I would probably enjoy it if I had a firm understanding of the Japanese language.

Sofuteni - based off manga [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Ecchi
Description:
The tennis comedy centers around the members of a female middle school soft tennis team and the twists and turns that their lives take as they aim for the nationals.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
Apparently, this is based off manga but no one is scanlating it, which is rare. I'll reserve my opinion to until I can find the manga/trailer, but prospects don't look good.

Aria the Scarlet Ammo (Hidan no Aria) - based off light novel [Trailer]
Genre:
Action, Ecchi, Harem
Description:
Tokyo Butei High school--- It is a special school where armed detectives, also known as "Butei" are being brought up. Tohyama Kinji is a sophomore student who has the unique body which activates a "super mode" when it was stimulated by "something". He tries to hide it to others in order to live a peaceful life. But trouble came to find him when he became a victim of a bombing incident, where he met the Butei high "Assault" department elite, Aria H. Kanzaki.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
I looked at a couple of chapters from the manga. This looks like pretty generic stuff, so I doubt I'll watch an episode of it.

A Channel - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Slice of Life
Description:
4-Coma about Tooru who has just entered the same high school as her best and childhood friend, Run-chan, who is now a second-year and Run-chan's friends, Yuuko-chan (who Tooru bullies because they meet under bad circumstances) and Nagi-chan (who watches in their daily lives).
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
This gives me the EXACT feel of Lucky Stars when I'm watching the trailer. I hated Lucky Star to its core, so this is a no.

Lotte's Toy (Lotte no Omocha!/Astarotte no Omocha! ) - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Ecchi
Description:
In the medieval fantasy world of Alfheimr, the succubus princess Astrarotte Ygvar, the first princess of the kingdom of Ygvar, has just reached the age of 10. For the coming years of a young succubus life, it is necessary for them to have a male harem. In order to maintain their body and preserve their beautiful appearance, they must consume a substance only found on males. This substance is a liquid called Sauzfryma, better known as semen. The princess, however, bears a great dislike against men, and only agrees to create a harem if a human male is to join. In the human world Midgar, young father Touhara Naoya was greeted by a suspicious lady one day, claiming that she is a fortune teller. She also claims that she can help him find the perfect job fit for him. Even though it seems suspicious, he accepts the free consultation in order to support himself and his young daughter. After meeting in the park with the suspicious lady a day later, he suddenly found himself in Alfheimr, a medieval fantasy realm located on a different world. The mysterious lady uncloaks her true identity as the Head Chamberlain of the Kingdom of Ygvarland. He is then led to the palace of Ygvarland and there, the job he accepted was finally revealed: he was to become a human candidate for Princess Astrarotte's harem.
[Description from Baka-Updates.]
Thoughts:
WTF?!?!?!!??!? No.

Under the Innocent Sky (Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai) - based off visual novel [Trailer]
Genre:
Ecchi, Harem
Description:
It's winter in the big city of Yanagihara, and young people will meet and fall in love. Takashi is a boy who plans to escape to another world, but is held back by thoughts of his younger sister Kobato and girlfriend Asuka. Shusuke is a poor part-timer who has to work with student-author Hiyoko in spite of their initial dislike for each other. The antisocial Hayato makes his living as a handyman until he is visited by a girl name Naru.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
The standard visual novel adaptation to anime that you have pretty much every season. I usually have to watch at least one episode of these just to see.

Abnormal Physiology Seminar (Hen Zemi) - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy
Description:
Nanako Matsutaka is an innocent university student who is participating in a sexual perversion seminar led by the deviant professor Kenji Meshiya. She desperately tries to keep her morals as well as her sanity while amidst the strange group of students in the study group.
Thoughts:
It's kind of like Seitokai Yakuindomo, so it might end up being a guilty pleasure that I watch...but there's zero chance I'll blog about it.
(Aaro Note~ : ...I'll end up hearing about it every week, won't I.)

Health & Physical Education for 30 Years (30-Sai no Hoken Taiiku) - based off a guidebook [Trailer]
Genre:
Educational
(Aaro Note~ : The three of us struggled with this for a while. We still don't know.)

Description:
The guidebooks teach shy men around 30 how to date and have sex with women. Imagawa Hayao is a 30-year-old virgin bachelor. One day, a "cupid" descends from Heaven with the purpose of forcing him to "graduate" from virginity. Thus unfolds a pure love story between a 30-year-old bachelor and a 30-year-old bachelorette.
Thoughts:
O...kay... Curiosity killed the cat. I must see if even a bit of it.

Dog Days - anime-original [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Fantasy, Harem
Description:
In the land of Fronaldo, the Republic of Biscotti has been aggressively attacked by the Lion Kingdom of Garette. Facing potential defeat, Princess Millhiore summons a hero who can save the country. What she gets is Izumi Shinku, a middle-school boy from Japan. Awaiting him in Fronaldo is the task of becoming hero enough to defeat his enemies while learning the peculiar rules of battle in this strange new world.
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
Wow, a generic harem-looking anime that is an anime-original. I mean, the one thing going for you, being an anime-original, is that you don't know what's going to happen. Being a harem kinda removes that factor... Maybe this will turn out like School Days. XD

Tono to Issho Season 2 - based off manga [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Comedy
Note:
Ongoing anime.

Dororon Enma-kun - based off anime (from 1973) [Trailer]
Genre:
Comedy, Horror
Description:
Emma-kun, Yukiko Hime, and Kapaeru are members of a Demon Patrol that are sent to the human world to arrest demons.
[Origins of Description unknown.]
Thoughts:
Something that was made so long ago probably does not cater to our generation dependent on fanservice, lolis, and harems. So...no, won't watch.

Sengoku Otome - based off manga/pachinko game [Trailer] (not much of a trailer)
Genre:
Fantasy, Shounen
Description:
Hideyoshi is a normal modern middle-schoolgirl. However, she is one day transported to a world very similar to feudal Japan, with the exception that there are no men! There, she meets Oda Nobunaga whose ambition it is to unite all the land under her rule and gather together the "Legendary Crimson Armor".
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
An anime with nothing but girls doesn't qualify as much of a harem. Main thing is: the last anime based off the pachinko game was Rio - Rainbow Gate, and I think that went so fantastic that I won't even give this a try.

A Bridge to the Starry Skies (Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi) - based off visual novel [Trailer]
Genre:
Harem, Slice of Life
Description:
Kazuma moves to the country town of Yamabi Kochou together with Ayumu, his younger brother, due to the latter's weak constitution. On the way to Yorodzuyo, the inn in which they are lodging run by their father's old friend, they become lost in the unfamiliar rural environment. Further, a minor incident leads Kazuma further up the mountain... There, in the depths of the mountain, a girl appears before him...
[Origins of description unknown.]
Thoughts:
The second visual novel that got adapted to an anime for this season. One episode for this too, I guess...

World's First Love (Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi) - based off manga [Trailer]
Genre:
Shounen-Ai
Description:
Nodera Ritsu has just transferred from his father's publishing company to Marukawa Shoten. Assigned to the shoujo manga division, he crosses path with the person he'd least expected to meet. Takano Masamune is the editor-in-chief of the division Ritsu's been assigned to, and the two seem get off on the wrong foot right from the very start when Takano unexpectedly kisses him. However, there is more than what meets the eye: Takano is actually Saga, Ritsu's senpai and high school love, whom Ritsu had thought to have played him for a fool by taking his affections for granted when he confessed and summarily dumped him.
[Description from zero_kiryuu.]
Thoughts:
I don't think I really need women's eye-candy anime.

Qwaser of Stigmata 2 (Seikon no Qwasar) - based off manga [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Ecchi, Fantasy, Harem
Thoughts:
When the first season of this came out, I was like, "WTF?!"...and had to watch an episode. As I watched it, I was like, "..." The original had the screen pan away any time there was an ecchi shot, thus making HALF THE FUKIN battle scene pan away. Later, a "Director's Cut" came out where you see what actually happens...where you get bombed with nothing but hentai. Now, at this point, I was pretty WTF so I decided to pick up the first chapter of this manga to see how closely the anime followed it...and all I could say was, "Sellout." The focus of the anime was purely fanservice with lots of moaning and nipple sucking, whereas the manga had extremely well-drawn battle scenes and much less focus on the ecchi. What a sellout, tsk-tsk...

Honto ni Atta! Reibai-Sensei - based off manga [can't find trailer]
Genre:
Comedy
Description:
The story revolves around Kibayashi-sensei, a teacher whose hobby is speaking with the dead and whose special talent is exorcism. Kibayashi-sensei knows everything about the other world, but nothing about our own world.
[Description from ANN.]
Thoughts:
I'm not sure about these kinds of anime. No one's scanlating the manga so I can't really tell if it is good -but generally, these 4-koma manga are pretty nonsensical and I don't really like them.

Pearz' Final List:
Anime With Good Prospects (That Will Probably Show Up on Blog):
Steins;Gate
C: The Money of Soul and Possiblity Control
Electromagnetic Wave Women and Adolescent Boy (Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko)
MoshiDora
Appleseed
AnoHana

The One Episode Curiosity:
Everyday Life (Nichijou)
Sket Dance
Deadman Wonderland
Blue Exorcist
Hansaku Iroha
Lotte's Toy (Lotte no Omocha!/Astarotte no Omocha!)
Under the Innocent Sky (Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai)
Abnormal Physiology Seminar (Hen Zemi)
Health & Physical Education for 30 Years (30-Sai no Hoken Taiiku)
Dog Days
A Bridge to the Starry Skies (Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi)

Clearly, there are too many anime on list that has yet to be defined, so the first episodes will probably get a short post and I'll start picking and choosing which I like best.
