Un-Go In Review 9/10

This is my first review of a series so I'm hoping I make some sense here :)

Un-Go was a wonderful watch and surprisingly one of my favorites. Un-Go's mysteries contained many issues surrounding politics, government conspiracies, personal struggles, and other post-war concerns, however, Un-Go was presented with a very lighthearted approach to these concerns. Un-Go was not a very serious or dark show, in fact is was quite humorous and interesting, there were no dull moments for myself. The main characters complimented each other very well and each mystery was either fun or interesting to watch without being gloomy or saddening.

Characters
This was my main reason for watching the show, I loved the characters. While I may be a tad biased, the characters all have their own unique personalities and weaknesses. What makes the characters in Un-Go so interesting is how they are well defined by their actions and their expressions to what happens around them. What I loved about Un-Go was how the characters do not info dump us with who they are, but instead, a gradual understanding of the characters comes about by them showing their emotions rather than telling us who they are. I absolutely LOVED Inga, he was hilarious, creepy, and just a perfect fit for the serious and determined Shinjurou. There wasn't a character I did not enjoy or found a lacking of any personality.

Story
I loved the story that Un-Go treated us to, yes they were more like a series of mystery arcs, however each mystery gradually led us to discover several characters and their personalities. The biggest factor of the mysteries was the gradual but steady revealing of Kaisho's character. Kaisho was carefully brought to light as a key person who didn't get much screen time, which ultimately led to a great ending arc. The mysteries themselves made sense and were not over the top or stupid, instead they all had connections to the war and helped describe the type of world Un-Go takes place in.

Setting
The type of world that Un-Go takes place in was defined by the mysteries themselves. A post-war Japan that is steadily healing has many political concerns. The mysteries and events that unfolded all made connections to the post-war setting and was well presented throughout the season. It was a believable and very possible scenario that we can immerse ourselves within.

Overall
 I would love a second season, I cannot get enough of the characters, or the well thought out mysteries that linked so much more. Each mystery can be overlooked and we would see character exploration, political concerns, hints about what happened in the past, and a gradual buildup to the events surrounding Kaisho. No episode felt like a filler and each one showed us something new in the Un-Go world.

I can't think of anything they did wrong, Characters were gradually explored and were enjoyable, the environment was immersive and realistic, even the mysteries were well thought out and made sense.

Un-Go - 11 - Finale

Honestly I was blown away by the final episode of Un-Go. The episode had just about everything I expected, and more. We had Shinjurou and Kaisho's ideals revealed, Shinjurou solving the case, a surprising villain, and an epic battle involving Inga.

The focus of the episode was centered around the party invitation from the deceased Kaisho. Almost everyone who had a name and screen time over the past few episodes showed up in what was to draw out the truth behind all the mysteries. Once everyone had taken their seats I was surprised to see the table flip over and reveal some weapons, pending a possible battle royal between the participants.



Shinjurou admits his deductions were wrong, he initially thought the real Kaisho was at home during the bombing, while an impostor with the use of Bettenou's powers showed up at the T.V studio. It turns out Shinjurou was cleverly tricked, as the real Kaisho was in fact at the studio while the mastermind appeared at home. It was necessary for the mastermind to appear at home to re-enforce Shinjurou's suspicion of Kaisho's involvement.

With the discovery of the true Kaisho, Shinjurou points out the problem with how Kaisho arrived at the studio. He arrived either via train or by his security. Mizuno who was the head of the security force said he drove him but he was lying, and ends up being a member of Full Circle who wanted Kaisho ousted. Mizuno had access to Kaisho's personal files and even stole a missile to shoot the studio, causing the explosion. Shinjurou also points out Kuramitsu's involvement, which was kinda obvious, since she leaked information about the microwave satellite and brought in a manipulated Inga. The handkerchief Shinjurou gave her ended up in Inga's possession, in order for that to happen, Kuramitsu must have been at the same location where Inga was taken, the same location where Bettenou and the real mastermind were.

Shinjurou was on a roll, but before he could continue, gunshots are heard and a frantic Hayami chases into the darkness only to fall into some sort of black hole. Kaisho emerges and everyone is surprised to see him, I was even more surprised to see Inga appear at Kaisho's command and attempt to force a truth out of Shinjurou, but this is where things start to backfire for this Kaisho. As it turns out Inga has already asked a question of Shinjurou, and Shinjurou finally explains the cause of Inga's manipulation. Bettenou told Inga that she was a god, and Inga cannot resist a god, therefore Inga is under Bettenou's command. Shinjurou goes on to explain that this Kaisho is actually Hayami, and he appeared to fall down the hole and appear as Kaisho by Bettenou's powers. I did not see Hayami as the mastermind behind this, were talking about a guy who arrested a fridge fro crying out loud. I think this was the first time the suspect was someone no one anticipated and was very surprising. The real Kaisho appears alive and well, helping Shinjurou expose Hayami, faking his own death to help solve the case.

All of the sudden an epic battle between Inga and Bettenou starts. Holy sh!t was I ever thrilled to see some action from this show, I was very happy with this random battle as Inga devours Bettenou's soul.

In the end Hayami and Kuramitsu wanted to crush Kaisho to take the lead of energy control of the country. We learn that JJ Systems was actually creating solar thermal energy which is to send energy all over the planet via microwave satellites, instead of solar energy. Kuramitsu followed ridiculous conspiracy theories to  end up wanting to take down Kaisho, while Hayami wanted Koyama to look up to him as she did with Kaisho. 

Kaisho ended up back to where we started, he is still an opposing force to Shinjurou with their contrasting ideals. Kaisho ended up taking several precautions to ensure that Shinjuou would expose Hayami, he even had Mizuno killed. Shinujurou might not agree with Kaisho's methods, but the two seem to enjoy their unique rivalry of each other. I think the ending was very well done to keep Shinjurou and Kaisho from having any change of behavior, they are the same characters we learned to enjoy from the beginning of the season.

The post-mystery clip showed Shinjurou calling out Rie, opening up to her and sharing his past. He explains that he follows Inga because Inga has taken the body of a person who once saved Shinjurou, but later passed away. The ending scenes show the clean up and construction of this post-war torn Japan steadily healing.

Will there be another season? I would love one, but there is a movie out that is a prequel to this season but no subs as of yet.

Un-Go - 10 - Kaisho's Death

Episode 11 was filled with twists and turns, explaining some events while introducing new twists to the mystery surrounding Kaisho. After a very unusual emo'ish mood displayed by Inga in episode 10, it seems he has abandoned Shinjurou. I find myself to be a huge Inga fan, but I am content with Kazamori's presence to fill in the void. Episode 10 ended with Yuuki planning to work with the DIET member to get Kaisho to tell the truth though voice modification so that Bettenou's powers were rendered ineffective, or something to that extent.

After all the previous mysteries this one really takes the cake with my curiosity of the tension between Kaisho and Shinjurou. These two have very different views on how to go about doing things, Kaisho seems to enjoy covering up the truth for what he thinks is the best method that works for him. Yuuki on the other hand wants to reveal everything, exposing the truth without much worry for the events to follow.

I really love Kaisho's view on things, "People tend to think the truth is hidden, and there are people who believe that only they have arrived at the truth, but there are an innumerable number of truths, being satisfied with just one truth, is no more than ceasing to think about it beyond that point". Yuuki easily points out that covering up the truth is in itself, a selfish thing to do, who can say that Kaisho's version of the truth works for everyone.

I found the DIET member Kuramitsu's performance during the foreign affairs interview to be quite amusing, she easily brought to light some classified information as well as getting underneath Kaisho's skin with her "playing dumb" method. We learn that Kaisho might not have actually been at the studio, as there was no security footage on the cameras on site, according to Kuramitsu. Once she called forth her third witness, Inga, I immediately began to think that Kuramitsu might be behind the mystery. Kurumitsu called Inga for a reason, and just before Inga was called, Bettenou is seen whispering something into Inga's ear, as if Kurumitsu ordered Bettenou to tell Inga who to force the truth out of.

The truth ended up being a huge deal, Kaisho's JJ Systems have been altering files on every computer their software has been installed on, being able to alter and implemented data to organize false proof to deal with political offenders with falsified crimes.

After the fiasco at the foreign affairs interview, Kaisho leaves us with a few clues before suddenly "suiciding" with a car bomb. Telling Shinjurou through Rie about something he would obviously have known, about Bettenous's obvious involvement. A few other clues were the handkerchief, and the unreleased Yonogahime song which leads Shinjurou to begin looking into Kuramitsu's past, suspecting of her involvement. Not only was this a big turn of events as the mystery re-defines itself to be even more complex than initially thought, Mr. Yajima and the Yonogahime music hacker guy we saw making appearances last episode appear to have some sort of involvement with this case.

After all these clues, Shinjurous visit to the novelist reveals how Bettenou has tricked everyone to thinking the body of Kaisho is genuine, while it is indeed fake, and that Kaisho is most likely still alive. Even after figuring all this out, Shinjurou receives an invitation to a party by non other than Kaisho himself.

Everything is coming together quite nicely, the mystery continues to grow and develop, which is what I have been waiting for after only seeing small periods of gripping mysteries throughout the season. The build up of the finale has me on my toes, I can't wait to see how this will all add up in the end with Shinjurou obviously making a triumphant deduction of the case.

Un-Go - 9 - Suspect Kaisho?

I know this has nothing to do with the episode, but it's nice to see the Novelist get some punishment from Inga. 

Kaisho mystery! I have been waiting for an episode like this ever since I started to dislike Kaisho a few episodes in. After last week's magic heavy method of setting up mysteries, this week's episode is my favorite so far in the sense of the mystery. Although there was a lot of information to dive into, it was awesome and well tied into the mystery.

Izumi could easily bust him for his involvement in the Yonagahime song distribution.

First off, Izumi confronts with the hacker guy from the idol pop song episode, sharing some info on a group of hackers called "Full Circle", who have been exposing Kaisho's personal and professional information. It was nice seeing some of the side characters from the other mysteries re-surface to aid Izumi and Kaito. This Full Circle group seems to oppose Kaisho and have been attacking his JJ Systems company, which is apparently a major establishment in restoring internet and phone technology from the war. 

How funny, yet how sad since it actually happened.

Kaisho is about to have a live discussion with some top business men about some energy issues, however, just before the meeting, Full Circle makes some deadly public predictions. Full Circle leads us into the mystery by proclaiming that Kaisho will eliminate these top business men, as they all oppose Kaisho in some way. I took this as a light joke, thinking theses hackers are just trying to spark some fear and panic. Just as the live discussion goes to commercials, Kaisho leaves the room for a phone call from home. The other business men joke about Kaisho going to plot their demise, then the building explodes. I was very shocked, I really did not expect the building to explode, and while some of you right now are thinking, "way to go Djr7, you just spoiled the damn show!", this only leads up to the real mysteries. 

Clearly there's something deeper going on with Inga acting so strange.

This was probably the best intro to a mystery yet. We have Inga appearing somewhat afraid of something in the beginning of the episode, followed by a strange prediction by a hacker group, and then the possible involvement of Kaisho on a sudden bombing attack. 

Is this the real Kaisho?

The mystery only deepens when Kaisho suddenly appears at home, when he should have been at the television studio. He rushes off by saying he was only appearing on the studio via webcam. I don't know how many flags were risen here, first off the two Kaisho's contradict not only each other, but everything involving their presence. 

The studio Kaisho who ends up hospitalized, said he arrived via train, however his personal private security said they escorted Kaisho to the vicinity for the live debate. This Kaisho also said he had a call from home before leaving the bombing area, however there was no apparent call from home. The other Kaisho, who appeared suddenly at home, said he was going to go and check out the scene, but we never see from this Kaisho again.

The only possible predicament is that Bettenou is involved and caused everyone to hallucinate Kaisho's appearance at the T.V. studio. Bettenou is apparently working with Kaisho, and he is using her tricks to conceal himself, but for what purpose, what does Kaisho hope to gain from all of this? It was also strange to see Inga acting so out of character, he had a run in with Bettenou, and we even saw that someone was there with Bettenou. Another concern is what exactly caused the explosion, rumors of a microwave blast is said to be what caused it, but I remain skeptical.

Shinjurou believes Kaisho is behind this. Shinjurou plans on setting up some sort of meeting where he will be using a synthesized voice in place of the real thing to corner Kaisho and use the synthesized voice to trick Bettenou somehow. I don't really know what Shinjurou is planning, or what is going to happen, I can only wait in excitement to see how this will turn out.

Un-Go - 07-08 - More Crazy Powers

I had to batch the two episodes together because I was in such a "WTF" state of mind last week that I couldn't bring myself to post anything that would have made sense.

So far I have been very satisfied with each episode, however after watching the latest mystery unfold over the last two episodes, I fell like Un-Go might be heading in the wrong direction, taking a turn down the "magical powers activate" road. Up until now, I've felt that Un-Go focuses on solving unique mysteries that revolve around a post-war setting with some very intriguing characters, without the heavy use of magic. While Inga is one of the most interesting, and my favorite, she doesn't use her powers too often to ruin the careful creation and deduction of each mystery.

As we found out in episode 6, our "novelist" character wants to create his own crazy mysteries and have Yuuki Shinjurou solve them as the greatest detective ever. He brilliantly placed a mystery in front of Yuuki of which was suppose to end up with Mr. Yajima killing his wife. This brilliance was done without magic, and was the work of a true mastermind to conflict with our protagonist. After this brilliant display of creativity, I was terribly unsatisfied with how our crazy novelist resorted to using magic to create a new mystery.

The novelist imposes a false reality onto Yuuki and the other prisoners, creating a film studio setting where Yuuki becomes the main suspect after the "director" is found dismembered. Each prisoner is given a role to play in this false reality. I suppose it shows how powerful the novelist is, but it would have been much better if he could continue to create mysteries without the use of magic while behind bars. The mystery is only possible to solve once Kazamori shocks Shinjurou back into reality, breaking the spell, and opening Yuuki's mind to the real culprit.

The two episodes were much different than the previous, but it was still a good watch, I only wish the amount of magic used was reduced, the novelist seemed to rely on too much magic for this particular trick.

It would be almost impossible for Yuuki Shinjurou to solve the case by himself this time, as he is trapped within the false reality created by Bettenou. Bettenou seems to have some connection with Inga, as she also has weird powers. It was sad to see Hayami's screen time and character to be diminished to that of an info filler to explain Bettenou and Oono's cult, which I'm sure we will find out more later on. There was at least more character shown of Hayami at the end of the credits with his confrontation with Kaisho. Since Yuuki cannot proceed on his own, it's up to Kazamori to bring him back to his senses.

We finally discover the background behind the three girls or "actresses" who were caught up in the illusion, as well as the reveal of the real culprit. I was not expecting this mystery to involve the war like all the others, but it seems I was caught off guard and rather impressed with how everything was explained at the end with the "actors". Un-Go does a clever job of giving enough screen time for most of the characters while solving the mystery, everyone "fits" within the plot and plays a role.

I'm not entirely sure why Yuuki decides to spend more time in the prison, and I also have a feeling we will learn more about this Oono character, as he is shown in the end credits with Bettenou. I hope the amount of magic required to set up the mysteries is dropped with a return to our usual pace. The one thing I love the most so far is the build up of tension around Kaisho. We only have a few glimpses as Yuuki, Hayami, and Rie, begin to loose trust and suspect him of some secretive cover-ups.

Un-Go - 06 - A New Face Appears

Another day, another mystery, however this episode turns out to be the start of some opposing force to Yuuki. It is nice to finally see some long term struggle appear as a new face makes the scene as the opposing force of the show. This green haired individual apparently wants Yuuki to be the greatest detective, and in order for that to happen, he says he is going to initiate, or involve himself in situations to create a mystery for Yuuki to solve, no matter how cruel or unfortunate the results may be. He has quite the potential, after turning a possible joyful reunion for Yajima with his family, into an event where Yajima almost takes his wife's life away. There was no mention of the guy's name, but I'm sure they could have told us unless it's suppose to be a secret.

While the individual was only revealed at the end of the episode, this weeks mystery was pretty simple, however it had quite the escalation as rumors began to sprout. The mystery wasn't all that special, instead we were given a rather interesting and unfortunate outcome of the war for Yajima's family.

 After being imprisoned for a speech made during the war, Yajima's children were sent away to be cared for after their mother began to struggle to cope without her husband. Yajima's wife realized how terrible she was for neglecting her children that she blinded herself and suffered a loss of memory as well.  After finding the slips of super easy code within the books, Yajima believes they were from his wife to Kaisho, assuming they had an affair. As it turns out it was a way for the children to communicate with Kaisho who was helping them out, but It wasn't very clear on whether or not Kaisho did indeed have an affair. I never really liked Kaisho, so it was nice seeing him as a potential suspect this time around.

I love the little scenes between Yuuki and Rie, a nice little bit of side humor and possible interest between the two. I think Rie has a bit of a fancy for Yuuki, I mean, this technically could be considered a date after all. Also, it makes sense that Rie doesn't approve of her father's lies and cover ups, and wants to side with Yuuki, who wishes to bring light to all the mysteries. I do hope we continue to see more subtle scenes like this one pictured above. At this point in the series I believe I understand why I like the show so much, it's the interactions between Inga, Yuuki, RAI, and Rie, and not the mysteries themselves. Another thing to note is how well each mystery revolves around the effects of the war on Japan. I continue to look forward to next episode in hopes of more connection between Rie and Yuuki, they a make a humorous couple, just don't tell Inga on me, I think she might get mad.

Un-Go - 05 - Statue of Illusion

A welcomed serious expression from child Inga.

Although I prefer the two part episodes to help deepen the mysteries and further develop our characters through personal struggles, this episode did a fine job of cramming everything good into one episode without feeling rushed. We gain a new permanent sub-character as Kazamori joins the detective and his side kick, providing info towards the truth of Inga.

Best excuse to cut any conversation short.

The episode was centered around  Mr. Shimada and allegations of him turning a profit in gold bars from the deaths of three individuals. Three students apparently gave their lives to protect civilians from an attempted suicide bombing on Mr. Shimada during his speech about war being a profitable business.

And so the mystery begins.

The bulk of the mystery was well thought out and focused around an act of greed from the blood of victims. You could consider it a two part mystery, initially its about the allegations behind the gold bars, but in the end it becomes tied to the two deaths of the opposing side to Shimada.

I love the music when Yuuki solves the mysteries.

The rumored gold bars has everyone thinking to find and take them, whether it be for personal greed, or to shine light on Shimada's alleged crimes. A great tie in was Yuuki's clouded judgement towards Shimada, disagreeing with his philosophies he blindly alleges Shimada to be the killer. It was nice to see Yuuki make an error, showing that he is not perfect himself. We also learned that Inga follows Yuuki around, agreeing to suck the souls of truth (or something) from people instead of killing them. Yuuki begins to understand his mistake, and returns with confidence, and a clear mind, to solve the mystery.

I didn't think there was THAT much in donations.

I was happy that we got to see the truth become publicly revealed, instead of being hidden behind a string of lies like the previous episodes. This time, with Inga's super powers, Shimada is exposed for acquiring the gold bars by taking the funds and donations to his memorial. It was obvious that the sculptor with very little screen time and importance was the killer. While Un-Go usually shows the killer well in advance and allows us to make easy guesses, I did enjoy the amount of focus on Shimada that would divert our attention from the sculptor. Overall I was glad to see two crimes tied together with Yuuki being able to solve the two, while Shimada is exposed to the public without another cover-up from Kaisho.

It was a great episode for Un-Go as more issues surrounding the post-war setting show realistic situations concerning greed and conspiracies. I think I consider Inga to be one of my top characters this season, along with Yuno from Mirai Nikki. Inga is just so different and funny, a total contrast for Yuuki, which makes him all the more love-able. I would consider this episode to be the better of the first two episodes so far.

Un-Go - 04 - Paper Bag Family Part II

Do tell.

This week's episode was much better than I had imagined. I half expected a long series of explanations to further explain the mystery behind Kazamori and the Sasa family. As it turns out, the mystery deepens with more questions being raised, with a fair bit of surprising events, showing us the truth instead of bluntly telling us.

How do you arrest a refrigerator?

Directly continuing from part one, part two of the masked mystery begins with Yuuki pointing out that Sasa Kazamori isn't human, and thus, not dead. Almost immediately, more questions are raised as to what information the uncle and mother were hiding.

Kinky robot sex, that is all.

As Kazamori turns out to be a RAI, I immediately wanted to know what the mother and uncle had to do with this, as well as who was the one burned in Kazamori's place. Ultimately, the entire episode is dedicated to finding out who was killed, as well as informing us about the RAI. With the small info dump of the robots with RAI, we learn they were mainly used for personal pleasure and thus a bad influence on the youth. The real reason RAI was outlawed was to allow the military to take it and manipulate it for military use, which made a lot more sense and was also linked to the messed up war-torn world this show takes place in.

Why do people dressed in black suites and shades have to appear so angry and serious?

We are introduced to a new group involved in the crime, the Public Security Force, which is a militia operated by the military. Komamori, being alive, knew that the military was out for his research and special RAI. Komamori chose to fake his death to make it impossible for the military to steal the RAI, however a spy for the Public Security Force managed to infiltrating the Sasa house. Komamori, who had already killed the real Dr. Taku and used his body for his own death, used his Robot Taku to find the spy and burn him to death. This would allow Komamori to forever hide Kazamori, however Kazamori is able to imitate human behavior and is able to process "what is right", by exposing it's self at the moment where the uncle and mother were about to be arrested for Kazamori's "death". Kazamori chose to reveal it's self in order to clear the mother and uncle of the crime, and help Yuuki find Komamori.

It seems all of Inga's special powers are purple.

It was a very interesting episode with a lot more info to cover than I expected. In this episode we take a break from our usual routine for Inga, as he/she seems to freely change his/her form at will during the episode. Inga also showed off some cool moves in the child form against he public security force. We don't get to see what happens, but Inga somehow removes the threat before going back to the Sasa house.

Everyone already knew that.

We finally get to see Izumi's partner speak and have some character screen time. It appears that Hayami Seigen is a very serious police officer, however is somehow very stupid while acting so serious. I cant help but feel sorry for Izumi who has to work with such an idiot, at least he provided some early entertainment with his stupidity.

Overall I was pleased with how the mystery was solved. There was more to the mystery than initially thought with the military becoming involved and Komamori's faked death being explained. There was mention of Yuuki being on a battlefield, as well as Inga saying she eats the emotions of humans, so it will be interesting to find out more about our two heroes. Judging by the opening and ending credits, there are still a few more characters to see, as well as it appears that Kazamori will play a role in the show through her female child body, as indicated by her appearance in the intro and ending credits.

Un-Go - 03 - Paper Bag Family Part I

I was pleased with a two-part episode for Un-Go in hopes of a more interesting mystery with more detective work, instead of the quick deduction and relatively fast case-solving methods. This episode's case looks promising and was delivered very well, but I cant help but think it could turn out to be a let-down. It was a good episode nonetheless with a solid pace and enough screen time for everyone.

The first 5 minutes of the episode introduces us to the mystery, of what seems to be a curse on a mute member of the Sasa family, following a few strange occurrences in the house. I was very pleased with the way the mystery was introduced. They did a good job using devices such as eerie music, random blackouts, instant creeper messages from Kazamori, crazy paper bag masks to cover the identity of two characters, and a somewhat secretive intro to Kazamori and the doctor.

Flashback time! After being thrown into some sort of post-war setting, we get a little insight to the events that lead to the destruction in Japan. It appears the cases in the show all seem to have some relevance to the effects of the war. It makes sense and is a wonderful root for all the problems and cases to appear, all these cases are realistic with the war having serious effects upon the people and the industries of Japan. While the case itself was interesting, the highlight of Yuuki's deductions was non other than the humorous surprise twist at the end. I know I didn't see it coming, however it clearly made sense with all the hints portrayed throughout the episode.

Its so funny, yet so disrespectful.

One thing I mostly enjoyed was the amount of childish humor from Inga, I can't count how many times I laughed from his crazy outgoing personality. Inga is so easily entertained, the panda outfit, super happy smile, bells, and somewhat dark side when he transforms, makes such an awesome character.

Where exactly were you?

Once again mention of Yuuki not being in the country during important matters, that's the second time he's mentioned this, I wonder if it will develop into something important, where was he anyway, and what was he doing? On a different note, I was pleased that Rie had plenty of screen time, since she was almost non-existent in last week's episode, I wonder if she will turn out to be of relationship interest with Yuuki.

I would almost prefer two-part episodes since it allows the producers to fully present each case's characters. One example of this is the amount of expressions from Mitsuko Sasa as she shows acknowledgement of Inga's humor in part with her feelings about the apparent curse. These subtle personalities were very much absent from Darker than Black with each new character appearing without much background or much personality. I really cant wait to see how they wrap up the mystery this time, after learning about Koizumi, and with all the secretive themes surrounding the Sasa family, I really can't wait to find how Yuuki will work this out.
